1 per day challenge raises more than 3,500 for Barnardo's

Release Date: 15 Sep 2017

A Barnardo’s director has helped to raise more than 3,500 for the charity by completing a challenge to spend just 1 per day on food for seven days.

Barnardo's Director of Retail and Trading Roy Clark lived off of a basic diet of toast, pasta, rice and beans in order to come in under his £7 budget for the week.

Mr Clark, from Hertfordshire, who was joined in the challenge by his friend Steve Palmer, from Kettering, admitted that he found it the week quite testing.

He said:

It was really challenging as we were eating for fuel really, rather than for pleasure or as a social occasion.

For breakfast I would have a slice of toast and for lunch I would have brown rice, with red kidney beans and chick peas.

For dinner I ate baked beans with pasta… I was quite fed up with that by the end!

Food for thought

Just eating pasta, beans and rice every single day was very boring and functional but it helped me better understand the issues and challenges that people on a limited budget face week in and week out.

It was a fantastic opportunity to raise funds for the vital work we do here at Barnardo’s but it was also a learning and reflective opportunity for me.

Steve’s challenge was also really successful too, he found it tough as well but completed it.

The pair were delighted to get so much support during their challenge from their friends, family and colleagues and have raised about £3,500 so far.

Mr Clark said:

It was great to get so much encouragement from my co-workers, colleagues and my family too, everyone was really supportive and some have said they would join me if I was to do it again.

We are really thrilled with the amount of money we have raised and more is still coming in; so far, including the gift aid, we have raised about £3,500 which is fantastic.

He added:

If anyone else would like to sponsor us still we really would be so grateful; Barnardo’s really does help to transform the lives of thousands of vulnerable children across the UK so you really would be making a difference.
