ADHD

Barnardo's has developed a range of services for families of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and for professionals working with children and young people with ADHD. ADHD Training Menu (PDF)

"Children and young people with ADHD typically have difficulties in many areas of their lives including at school and making friends".

ADHD is a lifelong condition that has three core symptoms:

  • inattention
  • impulsivity
  • hyperactivity

Barnardo's believes that with the right support children and young people with ADHD can be helped to fulfil their potential.

For families

The parent factor in ADHD’ parenting programme

Being a parent of a child or young person with ADHD can be stressful. This programme aims to:

  • increase parents knowledge of ADHD and its treatment
  • give parents an insight into how it feels to be a child with ADHD
  • give parents advice on how to promote a more positive relationship with their child
  • educate parents on strategies for effective behaviour management.

The programme runs for nine 2 hour sessions on a weekly basis.

The programme has undergone a twelve month evaluative study from the University of London (read the executive summary (PDF)) and we are looking to further partnership working with the university to secure further funding for continued research into the outcomes of the programme.

The programme is also listed on the National Academy for Parenting Research Commissioning Tool-kit and we are currently waiting for the results of the academy validation process. View Parenting Academy Tool-kit Website

Attachment and Bonding

attbond baby

In the first years of life, children need to experience secure attachment to a caring adult. Babies often experience secure attachment with more than one adult, but for most babies the first bond with their mother is the most important. The experience of a secure attachment may also come from a carer, the extended family or another mother or father figure. Children who are able to form secure attachments are likely to be more resilient and to be able to manage stressful events better later in life.

This training links to Common Core, CWDC Induction Standards and National Occupational Standards for social work. Attachment and Bonding Flyer (PDF)
