Case Study - Our foster carers are special

As a Barnardo's foster carer, you have access to several things including a dedicated social worker, 24 hour support, comprehensive training tailored to the type of fostering you decide to do and support groups to connect with other foster carers.

Colin and Sharon have been foster carers with Barnardo's for 26 years and have cared for over 20 children with a range of challenging behaviors, disabilities and backgrounds. Whilst they say that fostering is not always easy, Barnardo's support has been 'invaluble' and the sense of pride that they felt when their first foster child went on to live with their birth family again makes it all worthwhile.

You have to look past what you’re seeing on the exterior and find the young child. We’ve had children who have had multiple carers before us and have lost their identity along the way. It’s important for us to give these young people the security they need. - Colin & Sharon

Case Study - Our adoptive parents are something else all together

Something that sets us apart as the leading provider of adoption services is our approach towards providing a home for a child. When working with a young person we have a heavy focus on their needs and instill this process in our commissioners' work.

After 12 years together, Marilyn and Rochdi decided to adopt two Muslim siblings. Before the children were adopted by the couple they had been in foster care for more than three years. They were in the process of being placed in separate foster homes prior to the involvement of Marilyn and Rochdi. We recognised the need for the children to stay together in order to reach the full possibility of their happiness.

The thought of them being split up sends shivers down my spine - Marilyn.

Since being adopted, the children’s school grades have significantly improved. They both enjoy an active social life with a wide circle of friends and attending after school clubs, including football and drama.

Why commission our fostering and adoption services?

We provide specialist fostering and adoption services in the UK such as emergency fostering, remand fostering and fostering for disabled children.

  • A wealth of experience in family placement - particularly children often considered ‘hard to place’
  • Access to a wide range of skilled staff working across our services: family support, parenting training, ADHD, bereavement and loss, leaving care, drug and alcohol support services and preparation for employment
  • Access to a range of adoption support services for both adoptive parents and birth family members.
  • Access to well-established and outstanding family connections services providing support regarding access to information and reunion work

By tailoring these services we create customised packages that meet local placement needs. As the leading children's charity we provide a service that is reliable and sector leading and want to work with commissioners to reach out to more children and young people.
