“My advocate listened to me”
Our advocacy service operates across the whole of London to make sure children and young people are listened to by councils, courts and others who make decisions that affect their lives.
Many of those who turn to us for help are looked-after children or young people who have recently left care and do not have a responsible adult to fight their corner on issues like housing, finances and contact with family members.
By building trust and appreciating a young person’s thoughts and feelings, advocates can help them feel involved in decision-making and help everyone strive for better outcomes while making sure their rights are upheld.
Barnardo’s advocates already support around 150 young people at any one time in different parts of the city, including Barking & Dagenham, Greenwich, Lambeth, Southwark, Croydon and Bromley, and our ambition is to reach into every London borough.
Our independent visitors also operate throughout London. They are adult volunteers who are matched with young people in care to form more informal, long-term friendships. Barnardo’s independent visitors are already working in Brent, Greenwich and Lambeth.
An advocate can help you:
- Know your rights
- Be involved in decisions made about your life
- Get what you need from children's social care teams
- Have your problems and concerns resolved quickly
- Learn new skills, take on new responsibilities and gain confidence
