Barnardo’s Leaving Care project
Barnardo’s Leaving Care project provides a range of housing and support services to young adults (aged 16+) who are leaving residential, foster or family care.
The project aims to provide supported accommodation to help young adults develop the skills, experience and understanding of independent living, with a view to enabling them to live independently in the community of their choice. This work not only focuses on the practical side, but also embraces the emotional impact associated with this major life transition.
Listening to the needs of the young adults over the years has led the Barnardo's Leaving Care project to develop an outreach service. This service provides intensive support to young adults in their own accommodation or in their family home.
The project also offers a fieldwork aftercare service to all young adults who have moved on from the project. This provides a range of support, including advice, assistance, befriending, advocacy and crisis intervention.
Barnardo’s work with young adults leaving care is currently being expanded and developed. Based on feedback from both young adults and from our professional partners we are currently developing a supported lodgings service, which will extend the options open to young adults leaving care.
