Personal information

Files

While you are in care, Social Services will keep a written record of their dealings with you - your file. Likewise, Barnardo's Manchester Leaving Care Service will keep a file of our contacts with you, as well as certain basic details about you on computer. You have the right to see all of these if you wish.

To see your Social Services file, ask either your Social Worker or their Manager, or the Office that last used to deal with you. Sometimes you will be asked to put such a request in writing. To see your Barnardos Leaving Care Service file/what we keep on computer, ask your Leaving Care Worker or one of our Service's Managers.

Confidentiality

Manchester Leaving Care Service has a written policy, the Confidentiality Statement for Young People, which says that no-one in the Service will discuss your circumstances or give out information about you to anyone outside the Service unless you give your permission and agree what is being said.

However, there are four exceptions to this:

  1. if you're still legally in care, we will keep your Social Worker informed of what's happening to you
  2. if we find out that you, or any young person aged under 18 who you tell us about, is suffering or has suffered any sort of abuse. In this instance we will need to discuss it with Social Services
  3. if we find you in a life threatening situation , or you are a danger to yourself or others. In this instance we will tell the Emergency Services
  4. if you wish to be referred to another Agency and they need background information from us about you. Though we will consult you about what we say if we can, we will be honest with that other agency
