Info for professionals

Barnardo’s Manchester Leaving Care Service (MLCS) provides an assessment, planning and support service to all young people leaving care from the City of Manchester in accordance with the 2000 Children Leaving Care Act. We ensure that thought has been given to preparing that young person for the time when they will need to leave care, and that proper plans are in place to ensure that their life will run as smoothly as possible towards this goal in the future.

Very important in this process is to ensure the young person themselves is fully consulted as to their views and wishes, and feels involved in making and bringing about plans for their future.

The service works by getting to know all of the city's young people in care, providing additional advice and support to young people as they leave residential and foster care and establish themselves independently in the community.

Manchester Leaving Care Service has a very strong philosophy of consulting and involving young people from the outset, ensuring they are placed at the centre of what is happening in their lives and ensuring that their views and wishes are taken seriously and that they are treated with respect.
