Life skills
It's really important that all young people get an idea of handling independence whilst still in care, wherever they are living.
- You have the right to proper preparation before leaving care. For example learning about cooking, buying food, ironing, washing, living on your own and budgeting. If it's not happening, bring it up in your reviews or in a resident's meeting.
- Ask to be taught these skills at any age - whether its helping with the shopping, learning First Aid , how to change a light bulb, how to cook, budgeting your money, how to use the washing machine, or anything else you can think of.
- Maybe you could invite someone along from an outside group to give you some help and guidance.
- Just as important are things like dealing with adults, keeping your cool and having confidence to do things on your own. Make sure you go to the shops or the Post Office on your own, travel on public transport, practice filling out forms, talk to people in authority
- If you have a disability or particular needs, you may need specific training or help you get the right skills for independent living - make sure you ask for the help you need. Ask to be taught new skills and try things out!
