Exclusion policy
Sometimes a pupil’s poor behaviour will lead to a period of exclusion from the school. We conform to the Department for Children, Families and Schools’ Guiding Principles on exclusions, and we try to use them sparingly, usually only for serious breaches of school policy or law.
The Principal may exclude a pupil for one or more fixed periods not exceeding 45 days in any one school year.
Permanent exclusion
When all other reasonable steps have been taken and it’s our judgement that allowing the child to remain in school would be seriously detrimental to the welfare of others, then a pupil may be permanently excluded.
If the decision is made to exclude, we will inform the pupil’s parents immediately. We will explain:
- why the student is to be excluded
- the steps that have been taken to try to avoid it
- arrangements to allow the pupil to continue their education during the exclusion period
- the date and time of the Case Conference, which must be held before the child can return to school.
While a pupil is excluded from school the Field Social Work team will maintain contact with the family and undertake a home visit prior to the Case Conference.
For permanent exclusion, we will also notify parents of their Right of Appeal, which will be overseen by an Independent Appeal Panel.
Staff record any incidents of poor behaviour particularly thoroughly and use clear rules about the behaviour that is expected from young people - Ofsted 2008
