Sports and health

Boy cycling at Barnardo's High Close School

Sports is one of our most popular areas with the pupils, and promotes fitness, fair play and team spirit.

Whatever their skill level, we encourage all our pupils to take up a sport, and we provide a range of activities to meet their needs, including:

  • swimming
  • football
  • trampolining
  • personal fitness in our multi-gym.

We have a brand new sports hall, which is well equipped to host a variety of sporting activities, and we have extensive school grounds.

Outdoor trips

We also organise various outdoor trips each year including our annual year 11 ski trip and Outward Bound courses.

In 2008, both pupils and staff alike braved near Arctic conditions on our Outward Bound trip to Wales, but even so, fun was had by all, and many have signed up to do it all again on this year’s trip!

Diet

But a young person’s health is not just about being active. Diet plays an integral part in the healthy life of all people, young and old, and we’re proud to have achieved the Healthy Schools Award and the top Five Star Award for Food Safety awarded by the Wokingham Environmental Health Team.

The whole school has committed to following a healthier lifestyle with standardised portions of food cooked by our domestic staff (including plenty of fruit and vegetables). And with our residential staff also following the Department for Children, Schools and Families guidelines about healthy eating in their units, we’ve virtually eliminated the consumption of junk foods and fatty snacks.

Drug and alcohol misuse, smoking and sex education

We also cover such difficult topics as drug and alcohol misuse, smoking and sex education, and often have outside speakers come into the school to share their experiences with the students.

Pupils also work on ‘keeping safe’ when out and about, primarily the potential dangers they face from sex, drugs and alcohol.
