Sam Nosal – Head of Art

Arts and music

The Arts and Music are areas in which High Close School excels, and we happily display our pupils’ creativity throughout the school campus.

Art

The high quality of our students’ art, which has included inventive interpretations of such artists as René Magritte and Salvador Dali, was further underlined when our Head of Art, Samantha Nosal, was named as Special Needs Teacher of the Year at the Teaching Awards 2009 and won a prestigious silver plato award.

At Art GCSE, our pupils regularly achieve grades A*-C.

Music

Performing in front of peers and parents is an important part of school life.

All pupils have the opportunity to join the school choir, which has been going from strength to strength, as well as learn a musical instrument, such as guitar, drums, recorder and piano – one of our pupils will soon be taking the grade one piano exam.

The school’s talent competition was well contested, and in recent years we have put on productions of The Lion King, The Wizard of Oz and Hairspray.

Trips to the ballet, cinema and theatre

We have also tried to inspire our pupils with fantastic arts and music related trips to the ballet, cinema, theatre and a rehearsal by the Philharmonic orchestra.

We believe that unlocking the creative talent of our pupils encourages them to express their emotions appropriately and helps to raise their self-esteem, and, to that end, we’ve been very successful.

There are notice boards around the school with excellent displays of photos and text about trips, as well as displays about school performances and award ceremonies. Staff and young people alike demonstrate enormous pride in their achievements - Ofsted 2009.
