Retail volunteers

A young retail volunteer working at a Barnardo's shop

Barnardo’s shops raise money to fund our work with vulnerable children and young people. Store managers rely on the help of volunteers like you to run the shop! There are loads of roles for retail volunteers and these include working on the till and serving customers, using your creative flair as a window dresser, working behind the scenes to prepare stock for display or keeping the accounts and files in order. Maybe you are a book worm, a music lover or a collectibles enthusiast? We always need people to maintain these specialist areas in their local store.

Volunteer in a Barnardo’s shop

  • help out in the shop and stock room
  • assist with the collection of donations or delivery of goods
  • show off your artistic flair by designing window displays
  • help with the IT and administrative tasks involved in running the store

Retail volunteering provides real work experience that could help you secure paid employment and some volunteers choose to complete retail qualifications, such as an NVQ, alongside their volunteering. Helping out in your local store for a few hours each week is a perfect way to meet people in your local community.

We welcome volunteers regardless of their age, ethnicity and background, disability or sexual orientation.

So, time really is money if you volunteer in one of our retail stores! Look at our current volunteering opportunities in retail or find out what two Barnardo’s volunteers have to say.

In their own words

Melissa, a volunteer in retail

My youngest child is at nursery now so I decided to try volunteering. I do one morning a week in my local Barnardo's store and I love it! I meet so many people and I see volunteering as time for me, away from my daily routine. I chose to volunteer for Barnardo's because, I am a mother and want to support a children's charity.

Ian, a retail volunteer

I volunteer in a Barnardo’s shop two mornings a week. I started coming along for something to fill my time during the week. I normally help sort out stock donated by the public. It’s good fun and I feel good when I do it. I also have a great boss!
