Retail volunteer internships
We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated individuals who are looking to gain experience within both the charity and retail sectors.
We have a number of exciting 'hands on' in-the-field Retail Development volunteer internship opportunities, supporting Barnardo's Area Business Managers (ABMs) on a wide range of projects. No two days will be the same and you can expect to take a ‘hands on’ role supporting the ABM in your region whilst gaining valuable work experience.
About Barnardo's Retail Team
- Barnardo’s has over 350 shops across the UK
- our shops sell mainly donated items
- we rely largely on support of volunteers to assist in the day-to-day running of our shops
- the branches trade either over 6 or 7 days a week
- last year Retail was responsible for 12.7% of Barnardo’s income
- retail's annual turnover over for 2007/08 was £27.3 million
The Retail Development volunteer internships are available throughout the UK, please state the area you are applying for on your application form.
Key development projects may include
- marketing development
- increasing donations of stock
- exploring opportunities to increase shop income
- creating media opportunities for the branch
- recruitment of new volunteers for branches
Barnardo's Retail Development volunteer internships provide volunteer interns with the following

In addition, Barnardo's offers volunteer interns the following
- travel expenses to and from Barnardo's and up to £4 for lunch
- access to the Barnardo’s internal vacancy list
- supervision and support throughout the retail development volunteer internship
- reference on completion of the volunteer internship
- any training relevant to the retail development volunteer internship
Whether you have just graduated, finished your A Levels and are looking for voluntary experience in your gap year or you are looking for a change of career path we welcome your application.
To apply you must meet the following criteria
- be 18 years old or over
- be available for three months
- be IT literate
- be committed to Barnardo’s vision, basis and values
The retail development volunteer internships are full-time but we can be flexible if you have other commitments. The retail development volunteer internship may require some weekend working but this is negotiable with time off during the week.
