Our volunteer internship is a 12 week placement in one of Barnardo’s offices or Children’s Services.
Our internships will provide you with valuable skills and experience to add to your CV.
12 weeks however, within reason, we will try to be flexible. If you are unable to commit to the exact dates or the full 12 weeks just make it clear on your application form and the team you are volunteering in will, if possible, take this into consideration.
3. Can I do an internship at other times in the year?
Unfortunately we cannot offer internships outside of scheme dates.
The scheme is open to anyone over the age of 18 and looking to gain valuable work experience including students, graduates, those looking to change careers, people returning to work after a career break as well as those looking to expand their skill set in order to find employment.
All our roles are different and require different types of experience and level of education. This information is available on each role description which are available when applications open.
You can apply for up to 3 internship roles on one application form. Simply put them in order of preference and we will pass them onto the other departments if you are not successfully short listed for your first choice.
Departments often like it if you’ve volunteered or had previous work experience but don’t worry if you don’t. We know that many applicants apply for a volunteer internship to get the work experience they need to kick start their career.
The most important thing is that you demonstrate on your application form how you meet the person specification by drawing on any experience you have had.
The scheme runs three times a year with volunteer internships starting in February, June and September. Recruitment for the volunteer internship scheme runs as follows:
- applications open in December for the Spring Volunteer Internship intake
- applications open in April for the Summer Volunteer Internship intake
- applications open in July for the Autumn Volunteer Internship intake
To apply you will need to download and complete an application form when applications open and send it to firstname.lastname@example.org before the closing date.
You will be invited to an interview if you are successfully shortlisted.
Our interns are given genuine responsibility and real projects to work on. We recognise that your decision to do an internship with us is an investment in your future career and we want to ensure that this decision is justified.
We offer both full and part time volunteer internships. The time commitment required is different for each role and this information is on the opportunity details advertised for each scheme.
The volunteer internships are based either at our Head Office in Barkingside, Greater London, one of our regional or national offices or in a children's service throughout the UK. The details of the location are given on the opportunity details when they are advertised for each scheme.
We really appreciate your interest in our scheme but are only able to consider applications if they are supported by an official Agency or Government Department in your own country. This is because we find that young people, in particular, need support to find accommodation and also need funding to meet everyday expenses. Barnardo's is unable to meet living expenses or provide accommodation.
Applicants who are already fully supported within the UK are very welcome to apply as long as any visa requirements are adhered to.
Our volunteer internship is voluntary and therefore unpaid. However, we will refund expenses for lunch (up to £5.50 a day) and ‘reasonable’ travel expenses.
A volunteer internship will not lead to a job offer at Barnardo’s. However, as a Barnardo’s volunteer you will have access to our internal vacancies list during your internship.
Yes, we can provide you with a volunteer internship reference when you leave
