Case Study: Policy and research internships
Name: Will Sheldon
Internship year: Spring 2009
Internship team/department: Strategic Tendering, Policy and Research Unit
Q. Why did you want to volunteer with Barnardo's?
I wanted to gain an insight into the business workings of the UK's largest children's charity. The internship offered a unique opportunity to learn how Barnardo's works and to be a part of the excellent outcomes it achieves.
Q. What were your key responsibilities as a volunteer intern
I led several projects within the Strategic Tendering Unit, in my favourite project, I conducted analysis of the current business development and tendering process in each Regional Office and used my results to identify inefficiencies and lower total costs. I also produced a report on a forthcoming structural change to government funding for learning and skills which was used throughout the charity to inform staff and highlight opportunities.
Q. How did you benefit from being a volunteer intern at Barnardo's?
This fantastic experience, coupled with the strength of the Barnardo's brand has really boosted my CV, as well as giving me a unique third-sector viewpoint that I have been able to draw on in subsequent roles.
Q. Who would you recommend Barnardo's Volunteer internship scheme to?
I would recommend an internship with Barnardo's to anyone wishing to find out more about working in one of the UK's top charities. The combination of great experience, great people, and great results should make it an easy choice to apply.
Q. Tips for future interns?
I made some lasting friendships during the internship, both with fellow interns and with my line-managers, so would recommend taking the time to get to know the people you're working with.
