There are over 600 Barnardo's shops in the UK which sell donated items of clothing as well as accessories, quality homeware, books CDs, DVDs and much more. We also sell a fantastic range of cards and gift wrap. Our shops raise valuable funds each year to help improve the lives of vulnerable and disadvantaged children and are often the first contact members of the public have with the charity.

Could you join us?

Our shops are great places to work in! They’re fun, friendly and the main focus is on good customer service and working together as a team.

The size of our shops vary greatly. Each will have its own Branch Retail Manager (BRM) who is supported by a team of volunteers.

Our teams

We have a team of over 1160 employees and over 8500 volunteers who staff Barnardo's shops. We also have a support team who centrally manage Gift Aid, Finance, Recycling, Marketing, and Volunteer Recruitment.

Our staff team

In larger shops, we employ both a Branch Retail Manager and a Deputy Branch Retail Manager (DBRM). Usually in smaller shops we employ only a BRM. We may also employ Sales Assistants where appropriate.

As a BRM, you would be responsible for every aspect of running the shop.

That includes managing the budget, processing cash and credit transactions, banking cash, taking weekly stock accounts and collating sales figures. Safety, hygiene, security and compliance with fire regulations will also be your responsibility. And you will organise staff rotas and recruit and train staff for your shop.

To become a BRM you will need:

  • knowledge of retail accounting systems
  • good organisational skills
  • good leadership skills
  • to be a team player
  • great communication skills
  • a keen eye for fashion and a good sense of what will sell
  • to be prepared to work at a different shop at short notice.

Future opportunities

Once you have gained experience as a Branch Retail Manager, you may then want to move onto the next challenge such as managing a larger store or taking on the role of Area Business Manager (ABM).
We often have a number of specialist and more senior managerial posts available within the organisation and there will be opportunities to work in other functions within Barnardo's for the right candidates.
Positions are usually advertised in the local press as well as internally and on this site too so keep your eyes peeled!learn, lots of energy and an outgoing personality. Everyone is welcome to apply!

If you come and volunteer in our shops, we'll help you develop your career through to the possibility of becoming a paid Barnardo's employee.

Our volunteer team

If you'd like to work as a volunteer in one of our shops, we'd love to hear from you. You can work a few hours a week, a few days a week…whatever suits you and your lifestyle. The role is very varied - there’s always plenty to do - from sorting, steaming and pricing donated items, to serving customers, putting together window displays and keeping the shop looking fresh and tidy.

We are always looking for friendly, reliable team members to keep the shop running smoothly. This depends on everyone working the hours they have committed to. No formal qualifications are necessary, but a good level of numeracy will help. What we're really looking for is enthusiasm, a willingness to learn, lots of energy and an outgoing personality. Everyone is welcome to apply!
