The Legacies team

The legacies team is a dedicated group of eight people dealing with all aspects of legacy giving, from making a pledge through to receipt of the gift.

We aim to talk to more people about remembering Barnardo’s by way of a legacy gift, and we also build and maintain relationships with supporters who have already pledged a gift in their will to Barnardo’s. Through mailings, advertisements and participation in Free Will Schemes, for example, we communicate how essential legacy gifts are in helping Barnardo’s to carry out vital work with children and young people.

A small number of legacy pledgers may also appoint Barnardo's as Executor of their Will. Contact from us may then include regular mailings, letters, phone calls and/ or personal visits. After death, the team will collect medical/death papers, register the death and arrange the funeral, before moving on to the actual estate administration.

In administering estates, we liaise with solicitors or executors and also with other charities as appropriate, to ensure the safe and timely receipt of the legacies so generously left to us. The team deal on a daily basis with enormously varied issues such as taxation (both inheritance tax and capital gains tax), complex legal documentation, approval of estate accounts, grave maintenance and memorials and the sale of stocks, shares and property.

The team collectively maintains a comprehensive database, providing accurate statistical information that helps in tracking and forecasting legacy income.
