Gift Aid and tax efficient giving

If you have any queries about donating to Barnardo’s then please email us at supportercare@barnardos.org.uk or call 0800 008 7005.

In 2014 Barnardo’s reclaimed over £1.5 million in Gift Aid tax. Please sign up to the Gift Aid scheme to help us beat this figure!

If every charity supporter were to give their donations tax-effectively, charities could claim an estimated additional £900 million from the HM Revenue & Customs each year.

Providing you are a UK taxpayer, you could boost your charitable donations just by giving in a tax-efficient way. We appreciate that tax has its complexities and can be difficult to understand. If you are unsure about anything, please don't hesitate to call our friendly Supporter Care Team on 0800 008 7005 or email them at supportercare@barnardos.org.uk.

1. What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is a simple way to make your donation go even further. If your donation is eligible, Barnardo’s can claim an extra 25% from HMRC. That means for every £1 you give, it’s worth £1.25 to Barnardo’s, at no extra cost to you. These extra funds mean we can be there for even more of the UK’s most vulnerable children.

All that is required from you is a one-off declaration, which you can give by simply ticking a box on a form, online or by agreeing over the phone, and we'll take care of the rest.

You can make an oral declaration by calling 0800 008 7005; or by downloading a form and sending it to: Supporter Care, Barnardo’s Tanners Lane, Barkingside, Ilford, IG6 1QG

Please remember to let us know of any changes to your tax status, including changes to your name and address. You can contact us at any time by emailing supportercare@barnardos.org.uk or by calling 0800 008 7005.

2. Do I qualify for Gift Aid?

To be eligible for Gift Aid you need to have paid or will pay at least the amount of Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax as all charities or Community Amateur Sports Clubs will claim back on your Gift Aided donations in each tax year. You must understand that you pay less Income and/or Capital Gains Tax to cover the amount of Gift Aid claimed back on allyour donations in that tax year, it is your reponsibility to pay back any difference

Gift Aid can apply to donations of any amount made by an individual, large or small - it all adds up! You can Gift Aid your cash, cheque, postal order, direct debit, standing order and bankcard donations.

If you are unsure whether you are eligible for donating by Gift Aid, or simply want more information, contact the HM Revenue & Customs directly by calling their Gift Aid helpline on 0151 472 6038 or visiting http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/

3. Do I need to make a separate Gift Aid declaration for each tax year?

No, you only need to make a declaration once. We will keep this declaration as your enduring permission to claim gift aid tax relief on all donations you have made in the previous four years, the current year and any donations you might make to us in the future.

If you have not paid enough tax to cover in the past, or your tax status changes in the future, then please do let us know, otherwise we will keep on claiming and this could result in us receiving tax relief we are not entitled to, which could also have implications for you. You can contact us at any time about gift aid by emailing supportercare@barnardos.org.uk or by calling 0800 008 7005.

4. Does it matter how often or how much I give?

You don’t have to give regularly or have donated a certain amount for us to claim Gift Aid on your donations. We can claim Gift Aid on how ever many donations you have made in the past four years.

5. What if I pay a higher rate of tax?

If you are a higher rate taxpayer we are still only able to claim the basic rate of tax on your donation. However, you are able to reclaim the difference between the amount we reclaim and the 40% you pay yourself through your annual tax return.

6. What if I stop paying tax? Can I withdraw the declaration?

You can cancel the declaration at any time by emailing your full name and address, including your postcode, to supportercare@barnardos.org.uk or by calling us on 0800 008 7005.

7. I am a pensioner, do my donations qualify?

Income from state pensions alone is unlikely to qualify as you would need to earn above the personal allowance threshold to pay income tax. If this is your only source of income, we would always advise that you check with your tax office before completing a declaration.

8. Is there any extra paperwork for me to complete?

No. We reclaim the tax directly from HM Revenue & Customs; you just need to tick the box on the form to confirm you are a UK taxpayer. However, you may wish to keep a record of donations you make to charity in each tax year, to ensure that you continue to pay enough tax to cover the payments you make under Gift Aid.

9. Does my declaration cover all donations I have ever made to you?

We only have four years in which to claim the tax relief on your donations, so if donations you have made go back further than 4 years, we will only apply the tax relief to donations within the allowed period as set out by HMRC.

10. I have already completed a Gift Aid declaration for another charity. Do I need to complete another for Barnardo’s?

You have to give a declaration for each charity you want Gift Aid to apply. However you only need to fill in one form for us and we can claim Gift Aid on however much you have previously donated in the last four years and any future donations.

11. Can I get in touch if I have any other questions?

If you have any further questions about Gift Aid – or if your circumstances change and you need to cancel the agreement – please contact our dedicated Supporter Care Team by emailing supportercare@barnardos.org.uk or by calling 0800 008 7005.
