Barnardo's partnership with construction firm Balfour Beatty was launched in June 2013 and will be working in partnership throughout 2014 to help vulnerable young people move towards independent, sustainable employment. Balfour Beatty has pledged £100,000, raised through employee fundraising and corporate donations, to help fund Barnardo’s Employment, Training and Skills (ETS) services.
In addition, Balfour Beatty will be utilising its considerable expertise and experience to offer first class work experience, site visits, skills sessions, and mentoring projects for young people on Barnardo’s ETS projects.
The partnership between Barnardo’s and Balfour Beatty is incredibly important at a time when 817,000 young people in the UK are unemployed, accounting for nearly 18% of all economically active 16-24 years olds . Being out of work has a negative and often long term impact on a young person’s life and future income, causing greatly reduced self-confidence and often preventing young people from attending job interviews, hampering future employment opportunities. Youth unemployment is also heavily linked with increased risk of ill health, homelessness, substance misuse and involvement in crime.
Gabriel Hall is the Service Manager at The Hub in Stepney Green, a Barnardo’s service which focuses on increasing young people’s confidence, resilience and self-esteem through employment, work experience, volunteering, educational opportunities and qualifications. Gabriel says: “We are absolutely delighted to be partnering with Balfour Beatty. The organisation’s vital financial support will allow us to increase our work helping disadvantaged young people to turn their lives around. The in-kind support which Balfour Beatty can offer through the provision of work experience, site visits and donated materials will also be invaluable in helping us to secure work for the young people. I am incredibly excited about the opportunities available through the partnership, and can’t wait to see how it progresses.”
Allan McLaren, Deputy Director of Partnerships at Barnardo’s, says: “Barnardo’s partnership with Balfour Beatty demonstrates the myriad ways in which corporate organisations add huge value to our work transforming the lives of the most vulnerable young people across the UK. It is impossible to overstate the benefits of Balfour Beatty’s in-kind support, and we are also greatly looking forward to working in partnership on fundraising activities through the year. I would like to thank Balfour Beatty for their continued support, which will be invaluable in allowing our Employment, Training and Skills services go from strength to strength, helping thousands of vulnerable young people to turn their lives around.”
