Five top fundraising corporate charity partnerships in 2014

More corporate charity partnerships are aiming high, raising millions for good causes. We profile five top fundraising partnerships from 2014.

Diverse fundraising initiatives inspire successful corporate charity partnerships and raise lots for good causes. In recent years, Barnardo’s has had two partnerships with companies that have raised more than £1 million through dynamic fundraising.

We worked closely with Royal Mail to inspire their staff fundraising, raising £2.4 million over two years. The money has supported over 10,000 children and young people living in poverty, coping with disabilities or struggling with youth unemployment.

A member of the Barnardo’s team worked in KPMG’s head office three days a week throughout our two year partnership with the professional services company. This helped  us raise £1.4 million together, benefiting 20,000 severely disadvantaged children. “Our partnership with Barnardo’s was a fantastic talking point with clients,” says Isabel Thomason, Senior Manager at KPMG. “We came across a number of our clients who also supported Barnardo’s and we did collaborative activities. It was a great way to support Barnardo’s together.”

Here’s a round-up of five other top corporate charity partnerships that have raised more than £1 million for causes over 2014.

1. Cancer Research UK and TK Maxx: £17.7 million


Over the last decade, Give-Up Clothes for Good has raised £17.7 million for cancer research, and £4.3 million in 2014. Each bag of unwanted clothes TK Maxx customers bring to their local store can sell for £30 in Cancer Research UK shops. In 2014 the campaign collected 139,169 bags of donated goods. The majority of the money raised, around £13.2 million, has funded research into children’s cancers.

2. Diabetes UK and Tesco: £16 million


From a four-day go carting event to a Bounce for Brazil fundraiser during the 2014 World Cup, staff at Tesco, as well as the supermarket’s suppliers and customers, have done all sorts to raise money for Diabetes UK. They’ve raised £16 million for the charity which is using the money to fund research into a vaccine for type 1 diabetes. The money will also launch an online resource centre helping people with diabetes to eat healthy.

3. Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity and Disney: £10 million


Launched in 2008, this is Disney’s largest charitable project outside the US and aims to raise £10 million for the hospital’s redevelopment appeal. The Disney Store has run a series of product promotions to raise funds and awareness and staff have got involved in fundraising through auctions, sample sales, runs, treks and cycles. In 2012, through money raised, the charity opened a Disney Interactive Play area at Great Ormond Street and an outdoor sensory garden is due to launch in 2017.

4. Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research and Wickes: £4 million


In 2006, retailer Wickes chose Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research as their first charity of the year and they’ve renewed the partnership every year since. Staff and customers from the company’s 220 stores have taken part in fundraising events including family fun and fancy dress days, head shaves, walks across the country and BBQs. Individual colleagues have taken on sponsored skydives, bike-a-thons, marathons, triathlons and even shark dives. In August 2014, the partnership had raised over £4 million for research into blood cancer.

5. Alzheimer’s Society and Lloyds Bank: £2 million


Around 9,000 carers have benefited from Alzheimer’s Society becoming Lloyds Bank’s charity of the year for 2013 and 2014. The partnership has raised £2 million and launched the charity’s Live Well programme which offers support for people living with dementia, their families and carers. Staff working for the bank have taken part in overseas challenges, sponsored runs and cycles as well as office-based fundraising.
