Duracell partnership harnesses the power of social media

A social media fundraising campaign with Duracell raised more than £70,000 for Barnardo’s vital work, created a buzz on Facebook and Twitter and attracted widespread media coverage.

‘Powering Smiles’ was launched at the start of November 2014, and closed on Christmas Eve. It encouraged thousands of people to share, tweet and like the hashtag #poweringsmiles on Facebook and Twitter. Each share prompted a kind donation from Duracell to Barnardo’s.

The money raised will support our work with children with disabilities who use our sensory facilities which offer children with profound disabilities and limited mobility the chance to explore their environment through touch, sight and sound. In addition to this, Duracell also donated thousands of pounds worth of toys to our projects, including Furbys and footballs.

Former Spice Girl Mel C was the face of the campaign, which was covered in print by the likes of Hello! magazine, Now, The Observer, Closer, Bella and online. More than 35 leading websites carried a related story, including the hugely popular Mail Online. Powering Smiles also made it to the small screen, with Mel C promoting it with sparkle on Lorraine and Daily Brunch. Supporting activity included a live appearance from the much-loved pop-star in Kent’s Bluewater shopping centre, where fans could pose for pictures and show their support for the campaign.

Helena Burley, Barnardo’s Corporate Relationship Manager, said: “We are thrilled to bits by the success of this exciting campaign in partnership with Duracell, and we are hugely grateful to them for their generosity and enthusiasm from the start of the campaign and beyond.

“The level of engagement on social media and the coverage in the press has been incredible. Not only will Powering Smiles help us reach more of the children who need us the most, it has also been a wonderful opportunity to spread further awareness of our work. Huge thanks to Duracell, and everyone who took part.”
