Can I foster?

Fostering is a professional role and will require carers to work as part of a team to achieve the very best for all the children and young people cared for.

It is important that we recruit a broad range of carers from all cultural and social backgrounds and circumstances who are able to meet these children and young people’s needs.

Can you provide:

  • a spare bedroom
  • full-time availability as a main carer
  • experience of living/working with children.

Barnardo’s does not exclude anyone from consideration on the grounds of sexual orientation, race, marital status, gender, disability or employment status.

Who can foster?

Foster carers are required to provide care to children and young people for a few days, weeks, months or even years depending on their needs.

I am single, can I foster?

Yes. Barnardo's requires a broad range of carers who can meet all our children and young people's needs. If you are unsure about your circumstances, simply contact us for an informal chat.

I have a criminal conviction, does this prevent me from fostering?

Not necessarily. Many people who have made mistakes in their youth go on to become very understanding parents. We would, however, need to discuss the offences with you. Violent or sexual offences, unless committed at a very young age, will exclude you.

I have diabetes, is that a problem?

Not necessarily. All medical issues (including mental health) are considered by an independent medical advisor who will advise as to whether the condition affects your suitability or not.

What age limits apply?

You have to be at least 21 years old and although we have no specific upper age limit we will consider your age against the age of child you could care for.

Do I need a spare bedroom?

Yes.

How will fostering affect my children?

Only you can really judge this. They will be affected and we would include them in any assessment and discuss the impact of fostering on all family members post approval.
