Mainstream Classroom Assistant's Story
My initial feeling on being asked to go to Barnardo's was apprehension. However, any fears I had were soon dispelled as all the staff at Forward Steps were friendly and helpful towards me.
The five weeks at Forward Steps proved invaluable to me and the child I was accompanying. He settled into the routine "like a duck to water" and his behaviour improved. A member of the Forward Steps team then spent a further week at the mainstream setting, helping us to settle back in again. This had been my concern – introducing the system in a mainstream environment. This went smoothly and increased my confidence in both the strategies and my ability to follow them.
I feel that the whole experience has been useful and rewarding and hopefully our setting will benefit from my knowledge in the future.
