Family Group Conferences Services
Barnardo’s opened the Thurnscoe Family Support Service in 2000 to work with families and children in need to provide a range of services. These include individual assessments and support as well as parenting education in groups or one-to-one basis when required.
In 2006, drawing on the expertise developed by the service, the focus was shifted to meet a growing need for family group conferencing (FGC) in the locale and starting in summer 2007, expanded to include provision of FGCs throughout the Yorkshire region.
The work of this service is to provide:
- family group conferences directly
- training consultancy and coordination in family group conferencing and related activities.
Family Group Conferences
Family group conferences are based on the principle that children are best brought up within their own families and, where this is not possible, that they should maintain contact with their original family group (Children Act 1989).
Family group conferences focus on solutions and emphasize the strengths and resources of the family. This leads to healthier, improved relationships and a happier family life. Families who have experienced significant relationship and communication difficulties have been able to come together during a family group conference to make plans which promote the best interests of their children and, as a result, children and young people enjoy a more stable and positive family life.
