1. How long is the training at Dr B’s?

Training usually lasts for two years but does depend on the qualification you are following. Some young people stay for up to three years which is the maximum length of time on an NVQ options programme.

2. Do I need any particular qualifications?

There are no special qualifications required, but we do ask that you have an interest in catering or office work.

3. How old do I have to be?

You should be between 16 and 24 years old to apply for a training place at Dr B’s.

4. Apart from training in Dr B’s restaurant and coffee shop, what else does the training offer?

There are many aspects of the training which will help you gain employment. These are:

  • working for national vocational qualifications
  • obtaining the basic food hygiene certificate
  • obtaining the basic health and safety certificate
  • to assist team building, self care, life skills, etc
  • help with literacy and numeracy from a college tutor if required
  • work placements away from Dr B’s to gain a wider range of experience within the catering industry
  • individual training programme to be followed to make sure you achieve your aim
  • support if it is required to help with an personal difficulties, budgeting etc.

5. How much will I be paid?

Unfortunately we do not pay trainees however if you are under 19 you will be eligible for the government education maintenance allowance of £30 per week. You will not be able to claim job seekers allowance but will be able to claim other benefits.

6. Will I have to pay my travel costs?

You must pay the first £3.00 of your travel costs and we will pay anything over that amount.

7. If I live too far away to travel every day, or if daily public transport is too difficult, what can I do?

Some young people live in lodgings either from Monday to Friday or full-time so that they can train with us. You will be responsible for seeking your own lodgings although we can advise you on where to go.

8. Who provides the uniforms I need in training?

Your uniforms and safety shoes will be provided free of charge. You will be required to do your own laundry each day but you will have enough sets of uniforms to manage this.

9. How many hours per week will I be expected to work?

You will normally work Monday to Friday, with a total of 39 hours, from 8:30am to 4:30pm. You will also be asked to work evenings and weekends for special functions and you will be given time off in lieu when this happens. These times can be adjusted to meet an invididuals particular needs.

10. How many days holiday will I get?

Each young person has 22 days holidays per year plus bank holidays and public holidays, with some days to be taken at Christmas as agreed each year.

11. What happens if I am sick or have to ask for time off?

If you are ill we need to know before 10am on the day that you fall sick. We also need you to sign a form for our records. After 7 days absence you will need a doctor’s note and after 3 weeks special arrangements will be made. If you have a dental/doctor/hospital appointment, we will need to see the appointment card.
