Disability & Health

Barnardo's has a significant number of services that provide support to disabled children, irrespective of their circumstances. Our services include participation, short breaks, independent living and transition to adult support. Families with disabled children are often poorer, cannot get out and about and do not have access to childcare that would enable them to go to work and break out of poverty. A key aspect of our work is supporting families through this and helping them break this cycle.

Case Study - Kenneth's journey to independent living

Kenneth is a young man with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). He lived with his adoptive parents and attended school in England until his family moved to Northern Ireland to pursue better progression opportunities for him. Kenneth's parents contacted Belfast Central Mission after he began to slip away from leading any kind of ordinary life. It was here he was fortunate enough to meet Sharon, his support worker. Sharon had previously supported one our past trainees and knew about the support that Dr B's Kitchen provided. Kenneth found that this role suited him and he received lots of praise for his great work and his confidence and self-esteem increased. Within 13 months of joining, Kenneth was offered full-time employment. Kenneth is now living independently, with minimal support and regular contact with his adoptive parents.

So many good things have happened in my life. I am really happy and enjoying life
