Frequently asked questions

Is a children’s centre just for parents and carers?

No. Childminders, grandparents, relatives and other carers are very welcome to use our services. We want everybody who has an interest in families with young children to become involved.

We especially want to hear from Dads, and parents of children with additional needs who can sometimes be overlooked when services are being planned or set up.

Do I need to referred by an agency to use your services?

No. Children’s centres welcome anyone who lives in the area designated by the Government, it is not defined by income, employment, family or any other status.

How can I work for a Children’s Centre?

We take on volunteers to gain experience of working in our programme. This will not affect any benefits you are claiming and you can do as much volunteer work as you like, as long as it does not affect your availability for work.

Voluntary work can be a good way of improving your skills and confidence as well as a useful step to getting paid work.

Voluntary positions within the Children's Centre could include:

  • helping with the drop-ins
  • providing activities
  • administration duties

You will need to have CRB clearance, which we can arrange for you.

If you are looking for paid work, take a look at our website – http://www.barnardos.org.uk/work_with_us.htm Vacancies are also advertised in our centre and in our regular newsletters.

If I want to go back to work - how can the Children’s Centre help me?

At the Children’s Centre, we recognise the choice that parents make and some may not wish to return to work after having children. However, we are able to help you with completing application forms and CVs and interview techniques. You could also gain valuable experience as a volunteer in our centre. Please see http://www.barnardos.org.uk/work_with_us/volunteering.htm for more details or ask at the centre.

What happens at a drop-in?

Drop-ins are held regularly throughout the local area to give parents and carers the opportunity to meet, chat and play with their children in a safe environment.

Everything is free and snacks are provided.

If you wish to come to a drop-in but feel unsure about stepping inside the door, don't be! Our staff and the other parents that attend will offer you a warm welcome. We were all 'the new one' at one time or another and understand how you are feeling. Call the office or email if you feel that you need support to attend any of our activities.

What support will I get if I become involved with the children’s centre?

We have a number of staff who are able to offer support and advice to parents and carers.

Please contact us to discover all the activities we offer throughout the area where families are encouraged to come along, make new friends and relax with their children in an informal atmosphere. We also offer support with antenatal, postnatal, speech and language, child development, employment, debt management and training.
