Volunteers' Week

1st - 12th June 2016

volunteers week

The week commencing 1st June is nationally recognised as volunteers' Week. In the UK there are over 21 million people who volunteer for a variety of events and causes; this contributes an estimated £23.9 billion to the UK economy. Volunteers' Week is an annual celebration of the hard work and contribution the millions of volunteers make across the UK.

The first recognised Volunteers' Week was in 1984. This year the celebrations will run for two weeks, to coincide with the Patron lunch on 12th June. The week also marks the celebration of the Queen's 90th birthday. The Queen has been a patron to over 600 charities and organisations.

Here at Barnardo's Compass Partnership we make sure that we celebrate and reward all the volunteers who give up their time to provide help and support to young people. This provides us with the opportunity to show how grateful we are to everyone who volunteers. This year we have decide to paint and decorate tea light holders and give the volunteers cards to show our appreciation for all their help.

150 years anniversary

2016 marks 150 years since Thomas Barnardo founded the charity to help support children and young people.

150 years

It all began in 1866, when Thomas arrived in London. He was appalled to witness the suffering of young people living on the street, who had no support or anywhere to turn for help. He decided to set up a children's home to feed, care for, house and educate young people in need of help. Since then the charity has evolved and now has over 40 services and programmes supporting children and young people. In 2014-15, these services provided help to over 240,000 children, young people, parents and careers.

This anniversary provides us with the opportunity to reflect back and celebrate the work that has been accomplished over the last 150 years; as well as looking forward and continuing to improve the services we provide.

In order to celebrate this anniversary, every Barnardo's office is organising activities or events based around the 150 year theme. Here at Barnardo's Compass Partnership we have decided to celebrate by sending 150 supportive or encouraging messages to service users. We are also going to write poems that are 150 words long, with the help from Sophie McKeand; the Welsh Young People's Poet Laureate.

ResFest

Thursday 30th July 2015

ResFest is an annual event for young people from supported living projects, hosted at the Glyndwr University, Wrexham. The event helps to celebrate the achievements of former homeless people across the region, as well as providing them with a fun activity day; offering information, advice and inspiration for the future. The event is organised by residents who live at the Supported Living Schemes managed by Clwyd Alyn Housing Association. All the young people invited have either directly experienced homelessness or been at risk of becoming homeless. Residents host fund-raising activities to contribute to the cost of the event.

This year a number of the staff from Barnardo's Compass Partnership attended the event to promote the services that are available, provide information and answer any questions that any of the young people may have.

Two Long Term Volunteers Sadly Leaving

August 2012

Two long term volunteers will sadly be leaving us after four and half years of voluntary service to Compass.  Margaret and Colin have been involved with various projects over the years and have helped to support many young people who access Compass.

We are extremely grateful for the time and energy which they have given to Compass over the years and they will be extremely missed by everyone connected with the Service. We wish them luck for the future.

Young Person’s trip to Alton Towers

Thursday 14th June 2012

On Thursday 14th June a group of 13 young people from Compass attended a trip to Alton Towers. The trip was organised by Compass and funded by AVOW. The aim of the trip was to provide young people with a day of enjoyment and the chance to escape from anxiety and everyday routine.

The entire day was a success and the young people not only had a chance to relax but also had the opportunity to interact with staff members on a less formal basis. It was apparent that both staff and young people had gained a lot from the day.

Young people benefited immensely from a change of scenery and the chance to unwind and enjoy themselves. Most of them rarely get the opportunity to travel outside of Wrexham so it was good to see them having fun and socialising with others.

The service would like to say a big thank you to AVOW for making this trip possible.

Young Parents trip to Chester Zoo

Tuesday 12th June 2012

On the 12th June a group of young parents and their children, volunteers and staff headed off for a fun filled day at Chester Zoo. Adults and children a like were excited to see all the animals and spend time getting to know each other better in a social setting.

The trip was an absolute success and everyone enjoyed themselves, in fact we had multiple requests about when the next trip would be!

We would like to extend our gratitude to AVOW as without them this trip would not be possible. AVOW kindly awarded us with a grant to cover the costs associated with this trip in order to provide service users with positive activities and memories.

Filming Project with Glyndwr University - July 2011

On the 6th and 7th July, Volunteers from Barnardo's Compass Partnership joined Students and Lecturers from Glyndwr University to create four short film pieces.

These clips were of four actors playing out mock interview scenarios which will be used during a Barnardo's training course for Service Users. Each piece of film shows the different way a real life interview could take place.

Both the Creative Lens Media Department (who provided the filming and editing) and the Theatre Studies Department (who provided the Actors and costumes) were involved with this project and we are extremely grateful to everyone for giving up their time and doing such a professional job.

Thank you Glyndwr University.

This money enabled our Young Parent’s Group (Jungle Tots) to visit the Welsh Mountain Zoo in Colwyn Bay; this was something we’d been hoping to do for some time. Staff, young people and their children all thoroughly enjoyed the day out!

We would like to say a big thank you to our dedicated Volunteers who prepared and submitted the funding application which made this day out possible.
