Rachel and Ben's Story
In March 2010 my Brother and I were given a flat by Wrexham Council. My Brother was seen as a priority for housing as he has a disability. I also have a disability and was receiving treatment from Alder Hey in Liverpool.
We both had Educational problems and both needed lots of Hospital treatment. We were both looking forward to the extra space and independence despite our health problems.
Unfortunately, we soon learned that we were in a very difficult situation. The tenant below caused us lots of problems. There was noise, verbal abuse and anti-social behavior. Our hopes were dashed; our energy, finance and patience were pushed to the limit. Seeing the Police, tenancy enforcement was common place, there was no peace. The problems were causing my Brother and me to become ill. Our health deteriorated and our family did not know what to do
My Mother got in touch with Barnardo’s Compass in Wrexham and a Project Worker became our Support Worker. The problems were big and we could not cope because we were both ill. The Project Worker was very supportive and he gave us the correct advice. He was very professional and supported us to put things in order.
We were given a new flat as a result of the Project Workers advice and support. We were helped to get a cooker, washing machine and carpets as we did not have finances.
The Project Worker was our strength and support. We have learned from him, and are now more independent in our own flat. My Brother attends University and I have been accepted to start in September. This has been a learning experience and we know that none of it would have been possible without the help we received from the Project Worker at Barnardo’s Wrexham.
My Brother and I would like to say thank you to Barnardo’s. The help and support has enabled us to reach for our dreams. Thank you for being there for others in difficult situations. Without the help from Barnardo’s we would not be achieving as we are or living independently. Thank you so much."
