Amy’s story

Many vulnerable young people find that their first experience of living independently is isolating and frightening. Barnardo’s Cymru helps them to enjoy having their own homes and to move forward in their lives.

Take for example Amy. She was sixteen and living with her baby daughter at her mum’s house when her mum became ill and died from cancer. Amy’s father had died years earlier and suddenly Amy was without family and suffering with severe depression.

She was feeling too ill to care for her daughter because she was unsure how to manage her life and was being threatened with homelessness.  Amy was helped to find suitable housing for herself and her daughter and Barnardo’s Cymru helped her to furnish her home.

Amy says:

After my mum died I was coping well for a while and then I just lost it. I was in a bad way. Barnardo’s helped me so much with things like bills and budgeting. I never had to do it myself before and I had to learn.

My worker rings almost everyday to see if I need anything and to check everything is ok. She makes sure I keep my appointments and go to the doctors. She stands up for me but also knows that I can stick up for myself now too

Four years since first coming to Barnardo’s Amy is now much more confident and outgoing and is enjoying life.
