Youth Work

Barnardo’s has a long history of providing youth services, including substance misuse, youth justice, and work with the LGBTQ community. Our services reach out to young people in need of support that more universal services can often fail to engage with, offering more specialised and effective help to the young people that need it. Funding from our commissioners allows us to continue this work and help support vulnerable young people in their formative years.

Case Study - It doesn't have to end like it began

Mark’s anti social behaviour meant his whole family were in serious danger of being evicted and he was awaiting the outcome of an assault charge. Barnardo’s Family Intervention Service did an assessment and put together a plan to work with the whole family and with other agencies including education, police, youth service and housing.

After 11 months of support from Barnardo’s there were no further incidents of anti-social behaviour, his name was removed from the local Anti-Social Behaviour Case Conference and Mark had moved on from the gang he’d been hanging around with. He received a Student of the Year Award at his alternative education provider programme and has now taken up an apprenticeship in Bricklaying. Commissioners are an essential part of our work in supporting young people like Mark to regain their confidence and get their life back on track.

Case Study - Working together with the LGBTQ community

Barnardo’s has been working with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Questioning children and young people in Calderdale since 2011. The funding that we receive is vital to the success of our work. Since 2014, we have delivered ‘Identity’ training to a number of secondary school students and professionals, developed peer mentor and diversity champion schemes, provided support, advice and information to LGBTQ children and their families and offered support to young people looking to join the Calderdale IDENTITY youth group. This work has been life-changing for many of our young people, some of whom rely on our services to help them through what can be an extremely difficult period of their life.

I have found the group helpful for me as I have been able to meet other people who are Trans and been through or are going through similar experiences to me -Anonymous
