The reality of child poverty in the UK

Without Barnardo's I wouldn't be here.
I wouldn't be alive. They have helped me so much. They asked if I wanted help with housing. I said yes and it's the best thing I have ever done.

For the last two years, child poverty has risen by 100,000 children each year.

Barnardo's runs 394 vital projects across the UK, including counselling for children who have been abused, fostering and adoption services, vocational training and disability inclusion groups. Around one third of our work at Barnardo’s focuses on the alleviation of poverty and it is an inescapable element of nearly all our services. For every £1 donated to Barnardo’s, 94p goes directly to our work with children and families.

Your donations could help in the following ways:

£1 will buy a breakfast for a child to help them start their day alert and ready to
learn.

£2.50 could pay for a young person’s travel expenses for a week in order to travel to a Barnardo’s youth club and back home again. (outside London)

£2.50 could pay for a Barnardo’s after school club to provide healthy snacks for two primary school aged children, aged 5-11.

£10 will pay for an emergency wash and personal care kit for a young person who is homeless/run away from home.

£200 will help pay for day trips to the cinema or ice skating for families who through lack of financial resources were unable to do pleasurable things together.

£500 will help Barnardo’s provide parenting classes and IT and numeracy training, helping parents get back to work so they can get themselves out of the poverty trap by helping them to help themselves.
