Who are we?
- Carmarthenshire Young Carers service is a partnership service between Barnardo's, Carmarthenshire Social Services, Carmarthenshire Local Health Board and the Lottery through Big Lottery Funding
- in Carmarthenshire there are an estimated 500 young carers!
What is a young carer/sibling carer?
- a young carer is an individual who is under 18 and who provides care for a relative or friend who needs support due to a long term illness, physical disability, learning disability, mental health issue, or drug and alcohol problems
- a sibling carer helps to care for brothers or sisters with disabilities, terminal illness, mental health problems or learning difficulties
- the average age of a young carer is 12
- young carers / sibling carers do not always realise that they are young carers, and other people do not know how much work they do.
Who do we support?
- the core service currently offers support to up to 40 young people who are considered to be in priority need due to their caring role
- we support carers of all ages - the youngest carer to join our service is four years old
- the sibling service currently provides support to 20 sibling carers who are considered to be in priority need; there is an age restriction due to Lottery funding of 11-19 years old
