What do I do now?

Billie is a care leaver; her life has more uncertainty than most.

After Barnardo’s helped me

When I was 16 I first came into contact with Barnardo’s. Straight away they got me a flat, gave me a grant for furniture, they were just there whenever you needed to talk to somebody. They just did anything that they could. Like if I needed something they’d try their best to do it for me. I don’t think I’d be here today if it weren’t for Barnardo’s.

When I came into contact with Barnardo’s I was happy to have someone to be helping me. If they weren’t with me through some of my harder times I think I would have killed myself.

Just having someone to talk to was the best support I had when I left care. And the help with housing.

Since being at my flat I’ve really settled down. When I was 16 I was using drugs and drank quite a bit but I don’t take any drugs now, I don’t drink or anything. I’m just settled.

Barnardo’s said if they couldn’t find me anywhere to live before I stopped being supported by Barnardo’s then they weren’t gonna let me come off Barnardo’s before they knew I was settled which they didn’t really have to do because I was over 21. And still now Richard pops in now even though I’m over the age.
