Where your money goes
At Barnardo’s we believe a child’s future should never be defined by their past. For over 150 years, we have witnessed children’s incredible ability to turn their lives around no matter what they have been through.
We know that when we believe in children they start to believe in themselves.
That’s why we support and protect the UK’s most vulnerable children to bring out the best in each of them. Last year, we helped transform the lives of 248,000 children, young people, families and carers.
We couldn’t deliver our life-changing services without people like you. By joining our colourful Big Toddle, you can help give brighter futures to children like Jessica.
I am ten years old and have three sisters. One of them has Asperger’s and ADHD. It means my mum has to spend more time with her when she has meltdowns. I have to keep my younger sisters out of the way. I hold their hands and whisper to them when they ask what’s wrong. They are too young to really understand. Being part of Barnardo’s Young Carers means I get a break and meet other children with brothers and sisters like mine so I can talk to them about what it’s like.
Jamie’s and Janine’s story
Janine and Simon have four children including Jamie who is seven. A few years ago, Janine lost a baby when she was six months pregnant. Jamie didn’t understand how to deal with the loss. “I remember him putting his hand on my belly and asking if it was him who made baby Connor go away” said Janine.
Jamie was being assessed for autism and misbehaving at school and Janine has battled with depression since childhood. “We were all grieving and hurting and Jamie was pushing us to the edge because he couldn’t understand what was going on” said Janine.
Then the family met Sue from the Barnardo’s Big Manchester project. Janine said: Only Sue managed to get through to the school and Jamie. Without her we would have been stuck in a vicious circle. I’d advise anyone who’s struggling to give Barnardo’s a go. They take time to get to know you as a person, they take pride in their work and they want to help you. Thanks to them, life’s so much better than it was before for all of us.
