Barnardo's environmental policy

1. Policy

As part of the responsibilities implicit in our Basis and Values statement and in our ongoing commitment to children, Barnardo’s aims to be an environmentally conscious organisation contributing towards a safe and healthy environment for today’s children and for future generations of children.

2. Objectives

(i) To strive to adopt high environmental standards in all areas of Barnardo’s by reducing or removing environmentally damaging activities and encouraging activities that improve or conserve the environment.

(ii) To adopt and aim to apply the principles of ‘sustainable development’ – that is, development which meets the needs of the present, without compromising the abilities of future generations to meet their own needs.

(iii) To aim to include environmental considerations in all Barnardo investment decisions.

(iv) To assess, on a continuous basis the environmental impact of all Barnardo activities.

(v) To adopt an environmentally sound transport strategy.

(vi) To minimise the use of all materials, supplies, and energy, and, wherever possible, to use renewable or recyclable materials and components.

(vii) To minimise waste and aim for ‘waste-free’ processes.

(viii) To publicise Barnardo’s environmental position.

(ix) To encourage third parties involved with Barnardo’s (e.g. suppliers, contractors, etc.) to work towards establishing similar standards.

3. Method

(i) To improve Barnardo’s environmental performance an action programme will be developed together with a management system to monitor progress.

(ii) To increase the environmental awareness of staff, children and volunteers, thus generating their support and enthusiasm in tackling every day environmental issues in the workplace and in their daily living.

(iii) To appraise and, if appropriate, utilise mechanisms accepted in the public and private sectors which Barnardo’s might adopt.

4. Action plan

(i) To generate staff support and involvement in working together to tackle environmental issues.

(ii) To identify and implement those actions which could be developed to save money or at no cost to the organisation, some of which will bring about saving in the medium or longer.

(iii) To tackle those environmental issues which will necessitate some funding, particularly those with a lower payback period.
